Serena Ryder at Winterfolk I – A Moment to RememberA 17-year-old Serena Ryder took the bus from Peterborough to Toronto with her neighbour/manager Kelly to perform at the inaugural Winterfolk Festival in February 2003.Serena was generating a positive buzz everywhere, and we wanted to hire this young artist. At that time, the festival was located at College and Spadina, with shows in the Silver Dollar, the El Mocambo, and other nearby venues.I remember her set at the Silver Dollar. I was standing in the front row with Kelly, watching Serena get ready for her first set. From the moment she stepped on stage, she owned the room and held the audience captive for the entire set. Seriously - stage mastery far beyond her years. Her second set was at the El Mocambo later in the festival, where this image was taken. (See OLD Winterfolk Logo). We chatted during the festival, and it was clear she was headed for big things.
