WF XII Artist Quick Bios

 

Andy Griffiths is a passionate folkin’-rock singer/songwriter known for his fun energetic performances and catchy tunes.  He is thrilled to be part of the WINTERFOLK family again this year!

 

Anne Walker, singer-songwriter based in Toronto writes moving and deeply honest songs delivered with a strong, expressive voice.

Bob Ryder is a young folk, blues and country musician who plays with feeling and passion.

 

Brent Titcomb is a Toronto-based artist who has been an active participant in the Canadian folk scene for over fifty years, Brent generates a warm and inviting atmosphere when he’s singing his songs.

 

Brian Gladstone   is a finger-style guitar master, a dynamic lyricist, a philosophical storyteller, a most powerful performer and an intuitive songwriter.

 

D’Arcy Wickham is an exceptional artist experienced with all styles of guitar picking, Darcy has been a highlighted performer through the decades and was recognized with an OCFF ”Songs From the Heart” award in 2007 for his song ”Feather Fingers”.

Dan McVeigh is a keyboard player whose strong voice along with his musical talent has been compared to great artists such as Ronnie Milsap, Billy Joel, Eagles and Garth Brooks to name a few.

 

Danny Marks is a well-known musician, local radio host, nightclub attraction for decades and performer of multiple award winning albums.  Danny is celebrated for his unique guitar sound and velvet voice.

David Bradstreet is a Canadian singer/songwriter who has been active in the acoustic genre since 1968.

 

Dinah Thorpe has been called “a wicked multi-instrumentalist with a low, smoky alto,” “a composer of infinite cleverness,” “heartrending and real…twisted and funny,” a singer with a “gorgeously deep and weary alto,” and “here to stay”.

Don Campbell is a full-time musician who is currently establishing himself in the Toronto music scene and whether he is playing with his band or an acoustic solo show, singing his originals or rock cover tunes, his passion for performing is undeniable and his ability to engage a crowd is irresistible!

 

Ginger St. James is known for her Country, Blues and Rock n’ Roll style; however, it’s her sultry, expressive voice that steals the show

 

Glen Hornblast is a well-known singer-songwriter from Toronto, whose music is a mystical blend of country, folk and blues – his latest CD “Once In A Blue Moon” has garnered rave reviews in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia.

 

Grainne Ryan is in an elite female singer-songwriter class. She’s in the classic mold of a Lucinda Williams, Julie Miller, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter.

 

Harpin’ Norm Lucien returns to Winterfolk with his personal harmonica and songwriting style. From Franco-Ontarian roots, to folk, to Blues, to Swing, his sensitive harp will make your heart sing, while his lyrics echo and ring!

 

HOTCHA is an award-winning, high-energy hillbilly swing duo blending old-time Western, bluegrass, early swing and country gospel.  Their music is delivered with the energy of a runaway train. Soaring vocals, lively accordion, gritty guitar, wailing harmonica and big-beat bodhran are featured.

 

Howard Gladstone is a Toronto-based singer songwriter, who has released 4 CDs of original songs since the year 2000, co-founded the City Roots Folk Festival that ran for 7 years, and performs about town here and there now and then.

 

Jack de Keyzer is a 2 X Juno and 7X Maple Blues award winning artist, blues guitarist, singer, song writer and producer and one of the finest blues guitarists on the scene  today.

 

Jason Fowler is an acclaimed guitarist/songwriter/producer who has released 6 solo albums, played on over 100 others, toured the globe with John McDermott, and shared the stage and studio with a who’s who of Canadian and international artists.

Joe Hall survived the queen west scene of the mid 1970’s to become a seasoned songwriter of tender ballads and bizarrely poly rhythmic “tings”

 

John Prince is a Newfoundland/Ontario-based artist considered to be a dynamic performer and passionate songwriter.

 

JoJo Worthington is a singer/ songwriter from Waterloo Ontario known for her avid songwriting and use of different genres, dynamics, effects and sounds on the ukulele.

 

Julian Taylor is one of the hottest talents on the Toronto music scene.  His voice and songs are guarantied to melt your heart.

 

Lorne Allan is an Oakville singer/songwriter who transfers the pain and passion of life experiences to his songs- delivered with raw emotion.

 

Lynn Miles is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She has received multiple awards including the Juno Award and three Canadian Folk Music Awards.

 

 

 

Maneli Jamal has wowed audiences around the world with his visual style of playing acoustic guitar. He incorporates many genres in his performances while keeping rhythm with his two hands but you’ll swear he has a trio with him. You’ve got to visually see him live to experience.

 

Marianne Girard and Allan Fraser share four decades of music and songwriting; songs that melt your heart with a back- beat you can dance to, accompanied by folk legend.

 

Mary James or Mean Mary is known internationally for lightning-fast fingers, haunting vocals, and intricate story songs.  She travels the genres of folk, bluegrass, and blues with banjo, fiddle, and guitar

           

Megan Elisabeth Boni is a folksinger-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and diverse performer with a passion for story telling and entertaining.

 

Mira Meikle is a young singer/songwriter with a very bright future. She writes and sings with startling maturity.

 

Rick Zolkower aka Mr. Rick has been performing traditional Americana music on finger-style guitar and vocals for over 20 years in the Toronto area

Nicholas Jennings is a music journalist and acclaimed author of Before the Gold Rush, a history of the Yorkville era of Canadian music in the 1960s.

 

Nicola Vaughan is a captivating singer/performer with a wealth of experience and style.  She toured many years with top-forty bands and has performed live and/or recorded /demoed with Platinum Blond, Kenny MacLean, Candi, Dan Hill, and Alannah Myles.  She hosts open mics  at Grossmans, Black Swan and Hirut.

Noah Zacharin, is a widely acknowledged guitar virtuoso and writer of beautiful, well-crafted songs, captured on 6 solo CD’s, with two new CD’s currently in production. His live performances are passionate, entertaining, and provocative.

 

Peter Verity has crafted his own unique expression in writing about life and love. He has used his experience performing in alternative country and rock bands to hone his skills as a solo artist and crowd pleaser.

 

Pilot Light is Singer/songwriter Miachael Kirkopoulos.  Born and raised in Toronto, He explores the simplicities of Folk/Rock/Acoustic music and is described as an honest, revealing, and vulnerable artist.

 

Random Order is a Toronto-based band.  Their “Zombie-fied zigzagging pulp fiction tango-rock reggae,” on the heels of their new album “Black Lipstick Kiss” will be featured at Winterfolk 2014 before heading out on their world domination tour.

 

Rick Taylor is a veteran fingerstyle guitarist and singer songwriter with over 45 years of performances under his belt. His styles range from delta blues to Canadiana.

 

Ron Hynes s a popular folk singer-songwriter from Newfoundland. He is especially known for his composition “Sonny’s Dream,” which has been recorded worldwide by many artists and was named the 41st greatest Canadian song of all time on the 2005 CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version

 

Sarah Beatty is a Hamilton based emerging singer-songwriter known for her songbird voice and wry wit.  Her songs land with an impact and her performances might just charm you right out of your seat.

 

Seb Agnello has released nine solo albums and has performed on and/or produced over 200 other albums.  He has gained critical acclaim and widespread recognition for his song writing, musicianship, and ability to entertain an audience.

 

Shawna Caspi is a guitar-picking, classically trained folkie.  With a sweet tooth for a good story and a sly lyrical wit, she has a rich, powerful voice.

 

Soozimusic aka Soozi Schlanger known from Swamperella plays her solo music, showing her gritty, tough, playful, visceral, vulnerable, rootsy, gutsy and honest side.

         

Steve Raiken is recognized as an outstanding acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter who has been performing in Canada and the U.S. for over 45 years.

 

Sue and Dwight Peters are a folk roots duo with a vocal style rich in harmonies, and songs that weave stories of life in prairie towns, city streets and African villages with themes of peace, courage, and social justice.

 

Swamperella is Canada’s premeiere dance band.  They can rock your socks off with traditional and original songs

 

Tony Quarrington has played folk/rock/jazz for decades (not to mention klezmer and Hawaiian) but has lately been emerging as a powerful songwriter with a bluesy voice and a literary flair.

 

Urban-Gypsy is a unique combination of instrumentation and musical influences creating a dynamic and sensitive form of original music.

Whiskey Epiphany is a high-energy, Celtic acoustic rock band winning over crowds around the GTA!
