| Thomas Gannon Hamilton began his musical career at age 14 when he joined the 1st Violin Section of the Detroit International Youth Symphony. Two years later he became the youngest member of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and began playing in night clubs as a set drummer and singer. In 1980 he helped to bring about the Calgary Jazz Festival. In 1989, he was the first on stage at the New Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts. Since then, he has played at the National Gallery in Ottawa and has accompanied many artists including Oscar Lopez, Ian Tyson, Corb Lund, Jeff Healey. He also opened for BB King with Big Rude Jake in 1993. Tom has participated in the the Artists Co-op “Tizon” in Managua, Nicaragua where he also worked for the Institute of Culture. More recently, he has been involved with the production and promotion of Canadian singer/songwriters and has made a specialty of improvised accompaniment. He started the Toronto Urban Folk Salon in order to raise the profile of Canada’s authentic voices and to assist in giving Canada’s culture an international presence. As a musician and poet in Toronto’s vibrant coffee house and salon scene, Tom has befriended many of the performers in that community which accounts for his presence on the Winterfolk roster. It is with great pleasure that he will be hosting “The Best of Dr. B’s” and conducting at least one workshop. |
